Why We’re Swapping Sand for Glass: (And Why Your Puglia Pool Should Too)
For decades, silica sand has been the “king” of pool filtration. It was cheap, it was accessible, and it did an “okay” job. But at Puglia Pools, “okay” isn’t our standard. We specialize in luxury villas where the water needs to be more than just clear—it needs to be diamond-bright and medically safe.
That is why we have officially moved away from sand in favor of Activated Glass Filter Media (AFM). If you are still running your pool on a bed of sand, here is why upgrading to glass is the smartest investment you can make for your property this season.
1. Micro-Precision: Seeing the Unseen
The efficiency of a filter is measured in microns (the size of the particles it can trap). To give you a sense of scale, a human hair is about 70 microns wide.
- Traditional Sand: Filters down to about 20–30 microns. It catches the big stuff, but it allows fine dust, pollen, and dead algae to slip right back into your pool.
- Activated Glass: Our high-performance glass media traps particles as small as 1–5 microns.
- The Result: We can hear a leak through concrete, soil, and tiles, allowing us to pinpoint the exact square meter where the issue lies.
By catching these microscopic particles, the water doesn’t just look clean—it gains a “polished” sparkle that sand simply cannot achieve.
2. The “Biofilm” Factor: Stopping the Slime
This is the “Yuck Factor” most pool owners don’t know about. Sand grains are porous and jagged. Over time, bacteria move into these tiny pores, creating a protective “fortress” called Biofilm. This slime protects the bacteria from your chlorine, which is why some pools have a strong “chlorine smell”—that smell is actually the byproduct of chlorine fighting a losing battle against a dirty filter.
Glass is non-porous and self-sterilizing. Because the surface of the glass is smooth and carries a slight negative electrical charge (called Zeta Potential), bacteria cannot stick to it. Your filter stays sterile, your water stays safer, and that chemical smell vanishes.
3. Drastic Savings: Water, Chemicals, and Time
In the Puglia heat, water is a precious resource. Glass media is a hero for your utility bills:
- Faster Backwashing: Glass is less dense than sand and doesn’t “clump.” When we backwash a glass filter, it cleans itself much faster, using up to 50% less water than a sand filter.
- Chemical Efficiency: Because the filter is actually removing the bacteria rather than harboring them, your Aseko system doesn’t have to work nearly as hard. You’ll find yourself using significantly fewer chemicals to maintain perfect balance.
4. A Decade-Long Investment
Sand is fragile. As water rushes over it year after year, the grains rub together, become rounded, and lose their filtering “edge.” This is why sand usually needs to be replaced every 3–5 years.
Activated glass is much tougher. It is made from 100% recycled, heat-treated glass that maintains its shape and “activation” for 10 to 15 years. While the upfront cost is higher than sand, the savings in water, chemicals, and labor mean it usually pays for itself within the first two seasons.
The Puglia Pools Verdict
Switching to glass media is the single most effective “hidden” upgrade you can give your pool. It’s better for your skin, better for your wallet, and—because it’s made from recycled materials—it’s better for our beautiful Puglia environment.
