Cleanpool are individually wrapped tablets that are added to the skimmer and clarify the water in 24 hours while improving the performance of the pools filtration by increasing the amount of debris trapped within the filter. They can be used with any type of filtration including DE and do not change the PH, alkalinity or balance of the water.

A timely reminder………..

Once again it’s time to reiterate the importance of having your planning application double checked to make sure everything thing is being done legally. We have have just met up with a family who have just been in court and received a €44,000 fine and 4 month jail sentence for having had work done at their property without the correct planning.
They purchased the property through an agent here in Puglia who then allegedly organised all the planning for them. The family were very conscientious and had double checked everything with this agent who had assured them everything was legal and above board, but unbeknown to them she hadn’t actually bothered to have the paperwork filed or processed.
This led to police arriving at the property one morning, arresting the owner, the property being sequestered and the seasons holiday bookings being cancelled and money refunded.
Fortunately, in court, it appears that the judge must have realised that the owners were genuine people and that they had been clearly misled by the agent and the fine was suspended for 4 years. We now have to work with the commune to help this family  finish their dream holiday home with all the necessary paperwork in place or there will be unthinkable consequences.

She wasn’t even in court, wasn’t even charged of any offence because they had ensured that everything was done in such a way that they couldn’t be touched if anything happened.

Throughout the year, our work schedules and priorities change. Once all the pools are closed and the rental season is over, we immediately concentrate on preparing the properties for the following season. Always thinking ahead to the next pool season makes winter a great time to look into pool upgrades!

Many owners want their pools refurbished or to have larger pool projects completed. However, completing these works during the busy rental season is impossible. Therefore, for us, the winter season is just as busy as summer!

Our most common project this winter seems to be installing pool heating systems which help properties stand out from the ever-increasing crowd of holiday properties in the area. As the rental market becomes increasingly more prominent in Puglia, it is not enough to advertise “Trullo with pool” and expect the bookings to come rolling in as there are now so many properties one can choose from.

Total Alkalinity

Total Alkalinity is the amount of alkaline salts such as carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxide ions that are present in pool water. It is important to understand the part total alkalinity plays in the chemistry of water because it acts as a buffer for the movement of PH.
If the alkalinity of the water is too low, then the PH can be difficult to control and move up and down very quickly when you are trying to adjust it. If the alkalinity is too high, then the opposite is the case and the PH level is difficult to adjust.
As mentioned previously the PH level of the pool water effects the efficiency of the chlorine in sanitising the water and it is therefore important to try and keep the PH at the level where the chlorine is most efficient.
By maintaining the correct level of total alkalinity of the water you are in effect stabilising the PH level which in turn provides the optimum conditions for the chlorine to work. This also results in reducing maintenance costs as less chlorine is needed and less acid is required to continually adjust the PH.

Green Pools

​There is absolutely no reason for your pool to ever go green if it is looked after and maintained properly.  There are several reasons why Algae can take hold in a pool but all can be avoided with the correct water management and maintenance routines being adhered to.
Green pools are not due to the “green” coming out of the olive leaves that have fallen into the pool, or the “Olive Pollen” falling into the pool when the trees flower, they are down to poor maintenance or lack of understanding by whoever is managing the pool.
However, if a pool does go green then it is important to address the situation as quickly as possible to prevent it getting worse and therefore more time being needed to get it back to normal again. Most green pools can be brought back to perfect condition within 3 or 4 days (or quicker depending on how green it is) with the correct treatment and filtration. There really should not be a reason to change the pool water unless you need your pool crystal clear the same day so if someone is recommending a water change then get a second opinion first. With the price of water here it could save you several hundred euros.
As we have said before, prevention is better than cure. With the correct regular maintenance your pool should never go green in the first place so if this is a problem you keep having with your maintenance company then it could be time for a change.

Winter pool visits

When we first started out we found that quite a few property owners were being told that they needed to replace the water in their pools at the beginning of every season, especially if it was green when the pool company opened the pool in the spring.

 

That certainly shouldn’t be the case, especially if the pool water is correctly balanced at the time of closing the pool then there is no reason for it to be green when it is opened. Even if it is green it only needs three or four days to get it back to clear so there is no need to change the water. When we open a pool we want to be certain it is ready for you to dive straight in without any remedial work having to be done.

To ensure this is the case we visit the pool on a regular basis (free of charge) throughout the closed season to check the cover is still in place and to check the water chemistry is still correct and adjusted if required. By doing this we don’t get any nasty surprises when we open the pool, there is no extra work that needs to be done before your season starts, no extra costs to the owner and we can move straight into the weekly maintenance routine.
